Materials and Tools:
- 16 gauge, half-hard, round wire
- Earring wires (or make your own earring wires)
- Wire cutters
- Round nose pliers
- Chain nose pliers
- Bent nose pliers
- Chasing hammer and steel block
- Mandrel (I used Beadsmith's 4X Mandrel)
Mandrels: You can use anything around the house that is the shape and size you want to make. I used an oval mandrel. You could use a large size on a ring mandrel for a round shape.Step #1Working from the coil (don't cut the wire off yet), wrap the wire around your mandrel.Step #2
Cut the wire leaving about 2 inches extra on each side.Step #3
Pull the wire tightly around the mandrel and twist once. Pull the wire off the mandrelStep #4
Hold one of the wires in round nose pliers. (For more about making your loops uniform in a project, click here.)If one of your wires is longer than the other one, use the longer one. If they're the same, it doesn't matter which one you use.Step #5
Wrap the wire around the pliers forming a loop.Step #6
Hold the loop in chain nose pliers. Wrap the wire around once. While you wrap, straighten the loop so it's centered above the larger hoop.Step #7
Wrap 2 additional times. Then wrap the other wire around.Keep your wraps as neat as possible. 16 gauge wire can be difficult to work with and the wire will get harder as you work with it.Step #8
Trim off the excess wire making flush cuts. Then make sure that the ends are not poking out.Step #9
Hold the wraps from the top wire wrapped loop off to the side of the steel block and then hammer the hoop.Step #10
Add the hoops to earring wires.Repeat for the second earring.
