Wire Wrapped Hook Clasp Tutorial

Wire Wrapped Hook ClaspThis hook clasp is relatively easy and inexpensive to create.Use a heavy gauge wire for heavy beads or if your beads are lighter, you can use a lighter gauge.  Don't go too light because the shape won't hold well.Wire Wrapped Hook Clasp TutorialTools and Materials:

  • Wire.  I used 18 gauge copper wire.  20 would work, too.
  • Wire cutters
  • Round nose pliers
  • Needle nose pliers
  • Bend nose pliers (these make this easier, but you can use needle nose pliers if you don't have these.)

Step #1Wire Wrapped Hook Clasp TutorialCut about 5" - 6" of wire.Step #2Wire Wrapped Hook Clasp TutorialBend the wire about 2" from the end.Step #3Wire Wrapped Hook Clasp TutorialGrasp the bend in the wire with round nose pliers and start to wrap your wire around it.HINT:  You do not want to make this loop too big or you will have problems hooking your clasp later.  Although my photo shows the wire on the large end of the pliers, wrap around the smaller part, close to the tip.Step #4Wire Wrapped Hook Clasp TutorialContinue the wrap and make a loop.Step #5Pinch back the long end of the wire to make a loop.  I missed a photo here, but you'll see what I mean in the next photos.  If you don't do this, the loop will be off center.Step #6Wire Wrapped Hook Clasp Tutorial Wire Wrapped Hook Clasp TutorialUsing your bent nose pliers, pinch the wire until it's back to being parallel again.  This sounds confusing and it's hard to describe, but when you try it, you will get it.(Notice the loop - you'll see that I pinched it back like I mentioned in step 5.)Step #7Wire Wrapped Hook Clasp TutorialWire Wrapped Hook Clasp Tutorial Grasp the long end of the wire with bend nose pliers and make a bend like shown in the photo.Step #8Wire Wrapped Hook Clasp Tutorial Wire Wrapped Hook Clasp Tutorial Using your round nose pliers, grasp the clasp in the bend and create a loop.(Again, pinch back the straight side to create a loop.)Step #9Wire Wrapped Hook Clasp TutorialWire Wrapped Hook Clasp Tutorial Continue wrapping.  Go around at least 3 times and make sure that you are securely catching the loose end of the wire in the wrap.Trim any excess wire and make sure the end is pushed in.Step #10Wire Wrapped Hook Clasp Tutorial Wire Wrapped Hook Clasp TutorialGrasp the first loop with bend nose pliers and bend it as seen in the photo.Step #11Wire Wrapped Hook Clasp Tutorial Wire Wrapped Hook Clasp TutorialUsing round nose pliers, bend the clasp.Wire Wrapped Clasp TutorialFor the other side, this can hook into a jump ring or you can make a wire wrapped bead connector to hook it into.Wire Wrapped Hook Clasp Tutorial Wire Wrapped Hook Clasp TutorialAre you a beginner to wire wrapping and want to get started with a solid background?  Check out my Quick Start Guide for Wire Wrapped Jewelry - a FREE 10 day eCourse to get you started.Click to learn more and get started today:Quick Start Guide to Wire Wrapped Jewelry
