How to Make an Upcycled Paperweight

I think I've mentioned before that I have a part-time corporate-type day job.  I have a cubicle (a relatively large cubicle, but still a cubicle) that is the normal corporate beige-ish gray-ish blah.  I have been wanted to make it more "me", more colorful, more creative and more inspiring.  So I have been making little changes here and there and adding a little bit of my creatively. This is a project I made for my desk.  One of my words for the year is "freedom" and so that is the focus of this paperweight. This tutorial combines the use of a piece of upcycled glass and collage (and a little lace!)Here's how I made it:Upcycled Paperweight TutorialTools and Materials:

  • Mod Podge
  • E6000
  • Paper (scraps, dictionary pages, scrapbook paper, etc.)
  • Lace
  • Glass - my glass came from a leftover glass sample from a glass company (I purchased it at Lancaster Creative Reuse)
  • Foam brush
  • Scissors

Step #1Upcycled Paperweight TutorialDig through your paper scraps.  You might want to use old dictionary pages, pages from old books, scrapbook paper or anything else you have.  Pick out whatever catches your eye.My glass is small, so I know I just need small pieces and then background paper.Step #2Upcycled Paperweight TutorialUpcycled Paperweight TutorialUsing your glass as a guide for size, start to design your mini collage.  Also cut out a piece for a background paper.Upcycled Paperweight TutorialUpcycled Paperweight TutorialI used my vintage typewriter to type out the word "Freedom" to add to my collage.Step #3Upcycled Paperweight TutorialUse Mod Podge to glue down all the elements to your collage.Step #4Upcycled Paperweight TutorialUpcycled Paperweight TutorialAdd a layer of Mod Podge to the top of your mini collage and then glue it to the bottom of the glass.Step #5Allow the Mod Podge to dry.  It doesn't take too long, 20 minutes or so depending on the amount you use.Step #6Upcycled Paperweight TutorialType ribbon or lace around the paperweight.  Make sure the bottom is flat.Step #7Upcycled Paperweight TutorialCut out felt in the size of the paperweight for the bottom.Step #8Upcycled Paperweight TutorialUpcycled Paperweight TutorialUpcycled Paperweight TutorialGlue the felt on the bottom of the paperweight using E6000.  Allow to dry overnight.Step #9After it dries, trim any excess felt.Step #10Upcycled Paperweight TutorialUse your paperweight to hold down any papers that might suddenly get blown away in a gust from your desk.  :)Upcycled PaperweightAnd here's another example I made:Paperweight
