Decoupage Jar/Vase/Lantern Tutorial

 Fun facts about this tutorial:1.  You can use it as a lantern or a vase.2.  You can hang it or not.3.  The added button details.4.  The cute heart in the front! Materials & Tools:

• Jar - You can use a Mason jar or a clean sauce jar.  I used a sauce jar.  (which says Mason on it!)
• Tissue paper, 2 different colors - I used pattern tissue paper and regular tissue paper.
• Buttons
• Lace
• Floral or other craft wire
• Mod Podge
• Foam Brush
• Wire Cutters
• Pliers are helpful, but you don't need them if you don't have them.

Step #1Clean your jar.  I used an alfredo sauce jar that had a label.  I soaked the label off, but it still had some remains of the adhesive.  If it's not in way of where your heart will be on the jar, don't spend a lot of time removing the adhesive.  You won't even see it!I love this squarish jars and always save them!Step #2Cut a heart out of one of the colors of the tissue paper.  As you can see, I used pink for this (and I'll use pattern tissue paper for the rest of the jar.)Make sure the heart is the size you want and fits on your jar.Step #3Add Mod Podge to the jar in the area where you will put the heart, then apply the heart, making sure all the edges are down.Step #4Add the other color tissue paper (or the pattern tissue if you're using that.)Just add glue, add tissue paper, add glue, add tissue paper, etc.  Make sure the edges are all down as you go.  You can add Mod Podge on top of the tissue paper and add layers on top of it.When you're working around the heart, be careful and cut out the shape to go around.  For any other spot, you really can just rip or cut the paper anyway and put it on the jar.Cover the entire jar.  Trim off any excess paper.Step #5Add a layer of Mod Podge to the top.Allow jar to dry.Step #6Cut a piece of wire that's long enough to go around the top of your jar plus 4-5" extra.If you're using wire like I have pictured, it's probably going to be all bendy and kinked.  Just put it straight.  If you have nylon coated pliers, pull them down the wire - but be careful because it can really mess up your nylon!Step #7Add buttons to the wire.  Pull the wire through one hole across and down through the other hole.  If the button has 4 holes, use diagonal holes.  Add as many buttons as you like.Step #8Twist the wire with the buttons around the top of the jar.  Twist the wires around each other like in the photo.Step #9Continue twisting the wire until it's secure and trim off the excess wire.I just kept twisting the wire under itself until it felt very secure.**You could stop here and have a really cute vase, or add a tea light!**Step #10Cut a piece of wire for the hanger.  Measure how far you would like it to hang, then add a few extra inches on each side.Step #11Slip the hook you made under the wire you already wrapped around the top of the jar.  If you wrapped this tightly, be careful not to rip the tissue paper.  You might need to use pliers to get the wire through.Do this for each side.  Make sure to space each side evenly so the jar hangs straight.Step #12Twist the wire securely and trim off any extra.**This is another spot you could stop if you want!Step #13Add lace around the top.  I pulled the lace under the buttons as I put the lace around the jar.Step #14I tied the lace under the button in the front.I made some button flowers to add to the jar.  Click here for the Button Bouquet Tutorial.You can use it as a vase or a lantern.  Make it your own by changing the elements - use just the lace or just the buttons.  Don't hang it.  Use a different shape or no shape at all!  Just cut out a shape and leave it clear instead!Have fun and comment below with what you made!
