Creativity Tip: Color [How to Figure Out Color Combinations]
In my recent reader's survey I asked what people had questions about and something that came up over and over again was color. You want to know more about choosing colors and color theory.Color isn't something I really think a lot about or have problems with. So when I'm asked about it I'm not really sure how to respond."Just use colors you like" obviously doesn't solve the problem because if it were as simple as that you wouldn't have questions about it.I do believe that you probably intuitively have the ability to match colors. If you come up with combinations that other people wouldn't have come up with, that's great. It's something that makes you unique.If you want some help figuring out color combinations that you like, I have a tip for you.
Get some crayons, markers, colored pencils, paints or anything you have that has a good variety of colors. I used a 24 pack of crayons.Choose one color. You might want to start with your favorite color. It doesn't matter where you start. Then scribble the first color you chose next to each of the other colors in the pack.I chose blue first and then scribbled each color in my crayon pack next to the blue. You can see the photo above in my art journal how I did it. You could make prettier marks instead of just scribbling or make shapes or whatever you like. Just so you can see each color next to the first color you chose.I used every color next to the blue, even colors I was sure I wouldn't like with it. You never know, you could find interesting color combinations that you never thought were possible before.Then choose another color and start over with the process.You can do this for every crayon in the pack. It may take a while, but what I great resource to look back to. Or you could limit it to just a few colors.You could also do this anytime you want to see how some colors work together.Then go through your scribbles of color and see which ones you're really drawn to. Circle them. And also see which ones you hate. Cross them out.Now get out your beads and find beads that coordinate with one of the combinations you circled and make a piece of jewelry.If you want to use more than 2 colors, then do the same process but add in more colors. You don't necessarily have to go through the entire crayon box. You can just try out combinations until you find something that calls to you.I hope this tip is helpful and you find some new, interesting color combinations to use in your jewelry making!
