Understanding the Meanings Behind Colors

(This is Part 3 of a 3 part series. Click to go to gemstone bracelet tutorials: Part 1 and Part 2)

Years ago I created a Word of the Year Talisman workshop. It included a step-by-step process for choosing a Word of the Year, as well as deciding on a talisman. In the case of this particular workshop, a piece of jewelry that you’d make yourself.

One important aspect of the talisman that represented the word of the year was choosing a color that represented your word.

I recently shared two different techniques for making gemstone bracelets. Gemstones, of course, have their own meanings and qualities, but also understanding the meanings behind colors can really make your jewelry pieces have a special meaning.

Colors convey emotions, symbolism, and messages that can profoundly impact human perceptions and behaviors. Red, for instance, is often associated with passion, energy, and excitement, while blue evokes feelings of calmness, trust, and stability. Moreover, different cultures attribute diverse meanings to colors, adding another layer of complexity to their significance. Hence, by delving into the meanings behind colors, we can harness their power to communicate and evoke desired emotions and responses in your jewelry pieces.

You may want to choose a word for the year and then make a piece of jewelry to remind you throughout your day. Carefully choosing the color of that piece to symbolize that word can be a powerful way to remember the quality of the word you chose.

Here is a list of colors and their meanings:

I think it’s also important to keep in mind the meanings listed are what other people have assigned to these colors and this is just a jumping off point.

You can place any meaning on any color you choose.

You may see a color and a have a gut feeling about that color that isn’t listed above. I would always suggest you go with your gut.

As mentioned above, different cultures assign different meanings to colors as well.

If you want to make a piece of jewelry using a specific color, I would suggest using one of my gemstone bracelet tutorials (interlocking gemstone or using jump rings). You can use any beads you like. You don’t have to use gemstones!
