Gemstone Nugget Pendant

Gemstone Nugget Pendant Tutorial

Make this quick and simple pendant, add it to a cord or chain and you have a beautiful necklace.

I like to make my chain long for an easy, flowing look.  You can use a shorter chain to really show off the pendant more.

You may remember this technique from the Chunky Rose Quartz Necklace Tutorial that I shared previously.  If you’re looking for more of a challenge or a bigger project, check that out.

Gemstone Nugget Pendant Tutorial

Tools and Materials:

Step #1

Chunky Rose Quartz Necklace

Cut approximately 10 inches of wire.

If you use the same gemstone nuggets I linked to above, you will need about 10 inches.  The length will vary if you use a different size than I did.

Step #2

Chunky Rose Quartz Necklace

Hold the wire in round nose pliers about 1 1/2 inches from the top.

Step #3

Chunky Rose Quartz Necklace

Wrap the short end around one barrel of round nose pliers.

Step #4

Chunky Rose Quartz Necklace

Take the wire off your round nose pliers.  Hold the loop in chain nose pliers.

Step #5

Chunky Rose Quartz Necklace

The loop will be off-center at this point and we want to center it.  To do this I wrap the short end of the wire around the longer one and at the same time pull the longer wire out straight, which centers the loop.

Step #6

Chunky Rose Quartz Necklace

Wrap the wire around two more times.  Keep your wraps straight and close together.

Hint:  If your wraps are not close, use chain nose pliers to pull them close to each other.

Step #7

Chunky Rose Quartz Necklace

Trim off the excess wire making a flush cut.

Step #8

Chunky Rose Quartz Necklace

Using chain nose pliers, push in the end to make sure it’s not poking out.

Step #9

Chunky Rose Quartz Necklace

Slide a large quartz nugget gemstone onto the wire.

Step #10

Chunky Rose Quartz Necklace

Pull the wire back up across the bead.

We’ll just have wire on one side of the bead, so choose which side you would like to have as the front.

Step #11

Chunky Rose Quartz Necklace

Wrap the wire around the previous wraps you made a few times.

Step #12

Trim off the excess wire making a flush cut and make sure the end is not poking out.

Simply slide this onto a cord or chain of your choice and you have a necklace!

Hint:  Use your chain nose pliers to position the loop on top so that the pendant hangs correctly on the the chain or cord.

Alternatively, you could use a jump ring to attach the pendant to a chain, which is what I did.  You can either attach a jump ring and slide the jump ring over the chain or attach it with the jump ring to a link in the chain.

Have fun and be creative!

Wire Wrapped Crystal from Herkimer Diamond Mine

Wire Wrapped Crystal from Herkimer Diamond Mine

I previously told you about my experience at the Herkimer Diamond Mine when I was on a recent vacation.  Spoiler:  It’s not actually a diamond mine.  Herkimer Diamonds are actually very beautiful, clear quartz crystals.

You can read about my experience mining here.

We ended up with a few crystals:

These are the crystals in their just-from-the-mine state.

I knew I wanted to make a necklace with the largest one.  In fact, when my husband found that one he asked me if I could make jewelry with it.  Then we left with our mission accomplished.

So I cleaned it up, which encompassed just running water over it and very gently using an old toothbrush to get into the crevices.

And then I wire wrapped the crystal to make a pendant.

And added a chain.

Now I have a simple and beautiful souvenir of my anniversary trip and one that is so much more meaningful than anything I could have purchased.

I know that before I started wire wrapping stones it seemed so complicated and confusing.  I learned how to do it and now it’s a technique that I teach both in Rediscover Your Creativity & Make Jewelry (Week 1 is all about nature!) and in my Charm Bracelet eCourse.

You can also learn how to make a souvenir charm bracelet with my Free Rediscover Your Creativity & Make Jewelry Mini eCourse — but it’s a different sort of souvenir bracelet.  I show you how to make a photo charm and bead dangles and make a souvenir charm bracelet.  (I do not show you how to wire wrap rocks in that free mini eCourse, though.)

I love finding unique things on trips for souvenirs.  Going to the Herkimer Diamond Mine was definitely a unique experience and I’ll have this necklace for years to come to remember it by!

ECT TV Episode 27

Today’s tutorial is inspired by the materials themselves.  I started a Design Inspiration series here on the blog to show you different things that can be inspiring.  In ECT TV Episode 27 I show you how I was inspired by the materials themselves for this design.

I also made a pair of simple earrings to match.

Wire Wrapping for Beginners Day 18: Beaded Necklace with Pendant

Beaded Necklace with PendantThis month I’m working my way though my own book, Wire Wrapping For Beginners, and making 1 project per day.  I wanted to show you different examples of the projects while making myself some new jewelry!

Today is Day 18 and the project is Beaded Necklace with Pendant

Beaded Necklace with Pendant In the book  I specifically show you how to use an upcycled chandelier pendant in a beaded necklace, but you can easily use a bead dangle in the same way.  I also made my own spiral head pin to create the bead dangle.

Beaded Necklace with Pendant The Beaded Necklace with Upcycled Chandelier Pendant, and all the other skills you need to make this necklace are in my book, Wire Wrapping for Beginners.

Wire Wrapping For Beginners Day 6: Earrings with Side Drilled Beads

Wire Wrapping Side Drilled BeadsThis month I’m working my way though my own book, Wire Wrapping For Beginners, and making 1 project per day.  I wanted to show you different examples of the projects while making myself some new jewelry!

Today is Day 6 and the project is Earrings with Side Drilled Beads.

But I didn’t make earrings….

Wire wrapped Side drilled beadsThat’s right, I made a pendant.  Isn’t this cool?  It’s recycled glass.  I love it.  I’m wearing it right now and I don’t know if I’ll take it off anytime soon!

I did this to show you that you can use these tutorials in different ways.  So even though it’s an earrings tutorial, you can use the skills you learned to make something else.
