Button Earrings (Another Design)

Button Earrings
Aren’t these earrings cute?

In ECT TV Episode 43 I showed you the technique of wire wrapping buttons to use in the Buttons and Butterflies Necklace.  Then in this post I showed you some super cute button pendants.

And finally, I wanted to show you how cute these are as earrings!

Button Earrings

Very simple, too.  Just use the wire wrapped button technique from ECT TV Episode 43 for two matching buttons and then add earring wires to the loops.

Simple and cute!

ECT TV Episode 44: Button Earrings

ECT TV Episode 44: Button Earrings

In today’s episode of Emerging Creatively Tutorials TV (ECT TV), learn how to make button earrings.

ECT TV Episode 44: Button Earrings

These earrings coordinate with the Buttons and Butterflies Necklace from ECT TV Episode 43.

The main skill you’ll learn in this episode is how to open and close jump rings.

Video Tutorial:

I showed how to make your own earring wires in ECT TV Episode 24.  You can make your own or use pre-made earring wires if you like.

Follow me on Instagram here.  (@KimberlieKohler)

And use the hashtag #ECTTV when sharing photos on Instagram of the projects you make from ECT TV.

Step-by-Step Photo Tutorial for the Button Earrings:

ECT TV Episode 44: Button Earrings

Tools & Materials:

  • Buttons – I used 6 for each earring
  • 1 jump ring for each button *
  • Earring wires (or see link above to make your own)
  • Chain nose pliers
  • Bent nose pliers

*If you did the project for ECT TV Episode 43 and are using the same buttons you probably already know what size jump rings to use.  I used 3/8″ buttons and 7 mm jump rings, but you may have to experiment with jump ring sizes to get the right size for your buttons.

Step #1

Lay out your buttons how you would like them to hang on the earrings.  I used 6 for each earring, so I matched them up and placed them in a row.  It’s easier to do this at the beginning.

Step #2

ECT TV Episode 44: Button Earrings

I like to open all the jump rings I need for a project at one time so I don’t have to stop to open them as I go along.

This project takes 12 jump rings.

How to open a jump ring:

ECT TV Episode 44: Button Earrings

Find the opening slit in the jump ring.  Hold the jump ring with chain nose pliers and bent nose pliers with the slit centered.

ECT TV Episode 44: Button Earrings

Move one pair of pliers toward you and the other away from you to open the jump ring.  Do not open it out.  You’ll maintain the circle but just open the jump ring.

ECT TV Episode 44: Button Earrings

Step #3

ECT TV Episode 44: Button Earrings

Add a button to one of the jump rings.

Step #4

ECT TV Episode 44: Button Earrings

Close the jump ring.  To close a jump ring just do what you did to open it but in reverse.  I like to go back and forth the point where it would be closed a couple times.  You may hear or feel it click closed.

Step #5

ECT TV Episode 44: Button Earrings

Add an open jump ring to the closed jump ring.

Step #6

ECT TV Episode 44: Button Earrings

Add the next button to the open jump ring and close it.

ECT TV Episode 44: Button Earrings

Step #7

ECT TV Episode 44: Button Earrings

Continue to add the buttons with jump rings in the same way until all six are added.

HINT:  To make a balanced pair of earrings, make sure that you place every other button on every other side of the earrings as you go along.

Step #8

ECT TV Episode 44: Button Earrings

Open an earring wire.  (Just like opening jump rings.)

Step #9

ECT TV Episode 44: Button Earrings

Place the top jump ring into the earring wire.

Step #10

ECT TV Episode 44: Button Earrings

Close the earring wire.

Step #11

ECT TV Episode 44: Button Earrings

Repeat for the second earring.

Then take a photo on Instagram and use the hashtag #ECTTV 🙂

Wire Wrapped Button Pendants

Wire Wrapped Button Pendants

Last week I posted ECT TV Episode 43, the Button and Butterflies Necklace.  In it you’ll learn a few techniques.

One of the techniques is wire wrapping a button.

You can use this skill to make quick and super cute button pendants, too!  I made several the other day and I’m loving how adorable they turned out.

You could stack a couple buttons and do the same technique, too!

If you want to make these cute pendants, it’s the first thing I show you how to make in ECT TV Episode 43 and then you just add the button to a chain or cord.

ECT TV Episode 43: Buttons and Butterflies Necklace

ECT TV Episode 43: Buttons and Butterflies Necklace

In today’s episode learn how to make this cute necklace with lots of little buttons, some larger buttons and butterfly beads.

In it you’ll learn:

  • How to wire wrap a button;
  • How to make a bead dangle; and
  • How to open and close jump rings properly.

Here’s the video:

Step-by-Step Photo Instructions for the Buttons and Butterflies Necklace:

ECT TV Episode 43: Buttons and Butterflies Necklace

Tools and Materials:

  • Small buttons (I used about 60 3/8″ buttons)
  • Larger buttons (I used 5 3/4″ and larger buttons)
  • Butterfly beads (Mine are from Joann’s, but you could use any beads you like or use charms instead)
  • 7 mm jump rings (I used more than 70)
  • Lobster clasp
  • Chain
  • 20 gauge half hard round wire
  • 2″ headpins
  • Wire cutters
  • Round nose pliers
  • Chain nose pliers
  • Bent nose pliers

Buttons:

Of course, feel free to use any buttons you like.  You may want to use less if you don’t want that bunched up chunky look.

Jump rings:

If you’re not using the size buttons I am, that’s fine, but just make sure to test your jump rings with the buttons and find a size that will go through a hole on the button, the chain and close.

Step #1

Cut your chain.  I just measured it around my neck, decided where I wanted it to lay and cut it.  Then just put it aside for now.

Step #2

Wire Wrapped Button Charm

There are a few components to this necklace.  First we’ll make a wire wrapped button charm.

I use this technique for larger buttons that either a jump ring won’t go through or I don’t like the look of a large jump ring.  It’s also gives a little different look to some of the buttons.  These buttons will hang down a little lower.

ECT TV Episode 43: Buttons and Butterflies Necklace

Cut a piece of the 20 gauge half hard round wire about 4″ long.

Step #3

ECT TV Episode 43: Buttons and Butterflies Necklace

Slide the wire through one hole of the button and then cross the wire on top of the button.

Step #4

ECT TV Episode 43: Buttons and Butterflies Necklace

ECT TV Episode 43: Buttons and Butterflies Necklace

Twist the wires.

Step #5

ECT TV Episode 43: Buttons and Butterflies Necklace

Hold one of the wires in round nose pliers.

Step #6

ECT TV Episode 43: Buttons and Butterflies Necklace

ECT TV Episode 43: Buttons and Butterflies Necklace

Wrap around the pliers to form a loop.

Step #7

ECT TV Episode 43: Buttons and Butterflies Necklace

You probably noticed the loop wasn’t centered on the button.  There are many ways to make it straight, but the way I do it is to hold the loop in chain nose pliers and while I’m wrapping the wire around one time I also straighten the loop.

Step #8

ECT TV Episode 43: Buttons and Butterflies Necklace

Then switch to the other hand, hold the loop in pliers and continue to wrap around with that wire using bent nose pliers to hold the wire or just your fingers.  Then wrap with the other wire.

Keep the wraps straight and close together and as neat as possible.

Step #9

ECT TV Episode 43: Buttons and Butterflies Necklace

Cut off any excess wire.

Step #10

ECT TV Episode 43: Buttons and Butterflies Necklace

Make sure the ends of the wire are not poking out.

ECT TV Episode 43: Buttons and Butterflies Necklace

Step #11

ECT TV Episode 43: Buttons and Butterflies Necklace

I made a total of 5 of these larger wire wrapped buttons.

Step #12

Wire Wrapped Bead Dangle

Now we’ll take our butterfly beads and make them into bead dangles to use as charms.  Alternatively, you could just add some charms to your necklace or you could use any kind of beads and make bead dangles to add to your necklace.

ECT TV Episode 43: Buttons and Butterflies Necklace

Slide a butterfly bead onto a headpin.

Step #13

ECT TV Episode 43: Buttons and Butterflies Necklace

Hold the wire just above the bead with round nose pliers.

Step #14

ECT TV Episode 43: Buttons and Butterflies Necklace

ECT TV Episode 43: Buttons and Butterflies Necklace

Wrap the headpin around the round nose pliers to form a loop.

Step #15

ECT TV Episode 43: Buttons and Butterflies Necklace

ECT TV Episode 43: Buttons and Butterflies Necklace

Like in Step #7 above, straighten the loop out by holding it in chain nose pliers and straightening while wrapping the wire around one time.

Step #16

ECT TV Episode 43: Buttons and Butterflies Necklace

Switch hands, hold the loop in your chain nose pliers and use your bend nose pliers or just use your hands to wrap the wire around.

Keep the wraps straight and close together and as neat as possible.

Step #17

ECT TV Episode 43: Buttons and Butterflies Necklace

Trim off any excess wire.

Repeat 5 times.

Step #18

ECT TV Episode 43: Buttons and Butterflies Necklace

Open a bunch of jump rings.  It’s quicker and easier to have a bunch open instead of stopping to open a jump ring each time you need one, especially when you’ll be using a significant amount such as in this project.  I used around 70 7mm jump rings.

Step #19

ECT TV Episode 43: Buttons and Butterflies Necklace

Find the middle of your chain and add one of the wire wrapped buttons.

Step #20

ECT TV Episode 43: Buttons and Butterflies Necklace

Decide how large you would like the decorated area of the chain to be and then add the rest of the larger buttons.  I didn’t end my button area with large buttons, but with the smaller ones, so I left some room on each side of the last large button to add smaller ones.

Step #21

ECT TV Episode 43: Buttons and Butterflies Necklace

ECT TV Episode 43: Buttons and Butterflies Necklace

I added a small button to every link.  Grab an open jump ring, put it through a link in your chain, add a small button and close it.

I worked from the middle out and I just used a random pattern for the colors of my buttons.  Depending on how large the links of your chain are, the buttons will have a kind of bunched up, layered look.

ECT TV Episode 43: Buttons and Butterflies Necklace

Step #22

ECT TV Episode 43: Buttons and Butterflies Necklace

I also added small buttons to the wire wrapped buttons: one in the wire wrapped loop and one attached to the jump ring attached to the wire wrapped button.

Step #23

ECT TV Episode 43: Buttons and Butterflies Necklace

ECT TV Episode 43: Buttons and Butterflies Necklace

Next I added the butterflies.  I used 2 jump rings so they’d hang a little bit down from the smaller buttons.  I ended up attaching them into the jump ring of the small buttons instead of directly to the chain itself.

Step #24

ECT TV Episode 43: Buttons and Butterflies Necklace

Use a jump ring to attach the lobster clasp on one end of the chain.

Step #25

ECT TV Episode 43: Buttons and Butterflies Necklace

On the other end, I added a couple jump rings and an additional butterfly bead.

ECT TV Episode 43: Buttons and Butterflies Necklace

ECT TV Episode 43: Buttons and Butterflies Necklace

Isn’t it cute?

And after I made this necklace, I have seen so many more butterflies.  Maybe a coincidence, but maybe not.  😉

ECT TV Episode 41: Spiral and Bead Link Earrings

ECT TV Episode 41

Today I have a fun and unique pair of earrings for you to make.  If you’ve been following along with all the ECT TV episodes, you’ve made all the components of these earrings in one way or another.  Today we will put those components together in a different way.

I think that’s one of the great thing about learning online.  You can gather up the skills and techniques and then put them together in different ways.  So if you make these earrings as I show you, great.  But I also encourage you to try different things and put together different components in different ways.

ECT TV Episode 41:

Step by Step Photo Tutorial for the Earrings:

ECT TV Episode 41: Spiral and Bead Link Earrings

Materials and Tools:

  • 16 gauge half-hard round wire (you could use 18 if you like, but the spirals will be smaller.)
  • 20 gauge half-hard round wire
  • Beads of your choice.  I used 2 small per earring, but you could use one large
  • Wire cutters
  • Round nose pliers
  • Chain nose pliers
  • Bent nose pliers
  • Nylon or rawhide hammer and steel bench block

Step #1

ECT TV Episode 41: Spiral and Bead Link Earrings

Working off the spool of 16 gauge wire, make a loop.  First make sure the end is flush cut.

Hold the wire in round nose pliers.  I wrapped on the part closest to the handle to create a large center to the spiral.  The wire should be at the top of the pliers but not poking through.

Twist your wrist away wrapping the wire around the pliers.  Twist as far as you can and then readjust and complete the loop.  It will look like a “P.”

ECT TV Episode 41: Spiral and Bead Link Earrings

Step #2

ECT TV Episode 41: Spiral and Bead Link Earrings

ECT TV Episode 41: Spiral and Bead Link Earrings

Hold the loop in chain nose pliers and spiral around the original loop.

You can go around as many times as you like, just make sure you do the same thing for both (you’ll make 2 for a pair of earrings.)

I went around 3 times.

Step #3

ECT TV Episode 41: Spiral and Bead Link Earrings

Cut the wire leaving a tail of about 1/2 an inch.

Step #4

ECT TV Episode 41: Spiral and Bead Link Earrings

ECT TV Episode 41: Spiral and Bead Link Earrings

Make a loop in the same way you made the loop in Step #1.  I didn’t make this loop as large.

Step #5

ECT TV Episode 41: Spiral and Bead Link Earrings

Hammer the spiral charm with a nylon or rawhide hammer to harden the wire.  (If you don’t have a hammer/steel block, you can skip this step and it will be fine.

Repeat to make a second spiral charm.

Step #6

ECT TV Episode 41: Spiral and Bead Link Earrings

Now we’ll make earring wires.  Alternatively you could simply use pre-made earring wires.

Cut two pieces of 20 gauge wire about 3 inches long.  Make sure the ends are flush cut and they’re exactly the same size.

Step #7

ECT TV Episode 41: Spiral and Bead Link Earrings

ECT TV Episode 41: Spiral and Bead Link Earrings

Make a loop on one end of each wire in the same way you made a loop in Step #1.  I have a mark on my pliers to make these loops so that the loops are the same size.

Step #8

ECT TV Episode 41: Spiral and Bead Link Earrings

ECT TV Episode 41: Spiral and Bead Link Earrings

Line up the wires and bend them around a sharpie or something similar.

Step #9

ECT TV Episode 41: Spiral and Bead Link Earrings

ECT TV Episode 41: Spiral and Bead Link Earrings

Use chain nose pliers to bend back the end slightly.

Step #10

Use a wire rounder or jewelry file to round out the edges of the wire.

Step #11

Use a nylon or rawhide hammer to hammer the earring wires and harden them.

Step #12

ECT TV Episode 41: Spiral and Bead Link Earrings

Next we’ll make a wire wrapped bead link.

Cut a piece of 20 gauge wire about 4 inches long.  Hold the wire in round nose pliers about a third of the way down.

Step #13

ECT TV Episode 41: Spiral and Bead Link Earrings

ECT TV Episode 41: Spiral and Bead Link Earrings

Wrap the wire toward you and around the pliers to form a loop.

Step #14

ECT TV Episode 41: Spiral and Bead Link Earrings

ECT TV Episode 41: Spiral and Bead Link Earrings

Straighten the loop so it’s centered.  In the video for the episode this is a little easier to see, but I make a wrap and pull the long end of the wire straight at the same time.

Step #15

ECT TV Episode 41: Spiral and Bead Link Earrings

Wrap the short wire around the longer wire a few times and trim off the excess.

Step #16

ECT TV Episode 41: Spiral and Bead Link Earrings

Use your chain nose pliers to make sure that the wire is not sticking out.

Step #17

ECT TV Episode 41: Spiral and Bead Link Earrings

Slide on your bead(s) and make a wire wrapped loop on the other side.  Hold the wire slightly above the beads and follow the previous steps to make a wire wrapped loop.

Repeat to make a second wire wrapped bead link.

Step #18

ECT TV Episode 41: Spiral and Bead Link Earrings

Now you have made all the components and you just need to put them together.

ECT TV Episode 41: Spiral and Bead Link Earrings

Open the loop on the spiral charms just like opening a jump ring.

Step #19

ECT TV Episode 41: Spiral and Bead Link Earrings

Place one of the loops of the bead link in the opening and close the loop.

Step #20

ECT TV Episode 41: Spiral and Bead Link Earrings

Open the loop on the earring wire.

Step #21

ECT TV Episode 41: Spiral and Bead Link Earrings

Place the other loop of the bead link in the earring wires and close it.

Repeat for the second earring.

ECT TV Episode 41: Spiral and Bead Link Earrings

Customize these:

  • Try different beads
  • Try different sizes of spirals
  • Try different wire for the spirals – different gauges, different colors, etc.
