How to Make a Watercolor Spray Bottle

I’ve seen this idea in a few different places, so I’m not exactly sure where I exactly got the idea.  The basic idea was that you load up a spray bottle (or water gun in some cases) with watered down paint, hang up a sheet in your backyard and let your kids go crazy.

I wanted to try the same idea with watercolors.  I’m working on something that I want to have the feeling of a waterfall and I thought it would be the perfect time to give it a try.

Paint SprayerMaterials:

  • Spray bottle
  • Water color paint
  • Water
  • Canvas
  • Also, optional – paintbrush, paper towels, newspapers

Watercolor Spray BottleGet the paint into the bottle.  Eventually I just squeezed it in the bottle, at first I was being more careful.

Watercolor Spray BottleAdd water to the bottle and shake it up.  I added too much water.  I added more paint, but it was sort of helpless.  I think it’s because my spray bottle was so big it threw me off.

It worked out okay, though, because I was trying to get the look of a waterfall.

Watercolor Spray BottleMy spray bottle would only spray upright, so I had to sort of hold up the canvas, which caused my paint to run.  This was perfect for my project, but it may not be for yours, so be aware.

I used a paper towel to block off areas I didn’t want to spray with paint.  It’s good to put down newspaper to catch the stray sprays.

Watercolor Spray BottleThis is how it turned out.  I thought I was going more for the speckled look and was sort of disappointed at first, but as I continued on with the project I realized it was perfect.

The project is still a work in progress.
